Edward Clug

Edward Clug is independent dance creator in the field of contemporary ballet. Clug was born in 1973 in Beius, Romania, where he also finished studying classical ballet. In 1991 he joined Maribor's Slovene National Theater (SNG) as a Principal Dancer while also performing with Zagreb Ballet as a guest artist. In 2003 he was appointed for director of Maribor ballet at the Slovene National Theatre, Maribor and since then has successfully directed the Maribor ballet ensemble. His productions often challenge contemporary dance art. He is recepient of numerous national and international awards.[1]

In 1996, Slovene National Theater commissioned Clug to choreograph his first ballet called Babylon. Clug's first full evening ballet, called Tango, premiered at SNG in 1998. He then went on to create Bachelorettefor SNG in Ljubljana and Solo for two Chairs for the Ochi Ballet in Nagoya. His Radio & Juliet, choreographed in 2005 in Maribor, has been widely toured internationaly.[2]

In 2006, he created Architecture of Silence, in partnership with the Slovene National Theaters in Maribor and Ljubljana, two choirs and two orchestras. In 2007, he choreographed Sacre du temps for Station Zuid in Holland, which was followed with following productions: Pret-a-porter at the SNG Maribor (2008); 4 reasons for the National Ballet of Portugal (2009);[3] Pocket Concerto for Stuttgart Ballet (2009).[4]

Mr. Clug has received the Slovene Award of the Prešern Foundation (2005) as well as the Glazer Charter (2008). He is recipient of the Best Contemporary Choreography prize at the 18th International Ballet Competition in Varna; a Bronze Medal at the International Ballet and Choreographic Competition in Moscow (2001), a Bronze Medal at the 4th International Ballet Competition in the Contemporary category in Nagoya (2002); a Special Prize for Best Choreography at the International Ballet Competition in Nagoya (2002); and a Bronze Medal during the 17th Hanover Choreographic Competition in Germany (2003).[5]
